Can you even believe that it is already that time of year again to be thinking about fall family portraits? 2017 has to be the fastest year yet, but I am so excited to jump back into busy season and create lifelong memories for my KP Photography families.
Over the years, my family portrait photography style has evolved a bit. I started out ten years ago growing, and building, and learning, and of course searching on Pinterest for the cutest new ideas for posed family photography. Every session I stressed out about thinking of what new poses I would be able to come up with, worrying about kids that did not want to smile at a complete stranger for an hour, how I was going to make this session different from the last. While I loved the images I was capturing, they were not really speaking to my soul. As I am finding out a little bit more about what drives me as a photographer, my style is being molded along the way. I am finding that what really speaks to my soul is human interaction; connection between a family, the love a mother has for her children, the way a husband still gazes at his wife after years of marriage. That is the type of photography I want to create. I have done a lot of reflecting to realize that this is the path my vision needs to follow; the candid moments that happen everyday in your family, while still capturing those beautiful, traditional family portraits.
My family photography style is a mixture of posed portraits and unposed, candid moments between you and your family. I usually begin all of my sessions in the posed positions (the ones for Grandma’s wall) and then just try to have fun the rest of the session and watch you interact as a family with a little guidance from me along the way. We will play games, and make silly noises, tell funny jokes. I like to consider myself more of a story teller than a family photographer, because I want to tell YOUR story through beautiful imagery!
I schedule my family sessions sixty to ninety minutes before sunset or right at sunrise to achieve the dreamy golden light that you see in my photographs. Depending on the time of year, that can be pretty early or late. If you have a child that does not do well with staying up past 9:00 pm, I suggest scheduling a session when the sun sets a little earlier in the spring or fall. There are a few locations around the Norfolk area where I like to photograph, but I am always open to new locations (family farms, private lakes) within thirty miles of Norfolk.
I have a casual style of photography. You will find me talking to you and your family a lot, with special attention in engaging your children in the moment. If you have younger children, I may talk about cartoons, or sing songs. With teens, I may pull them off to the side and get to know a bit about them first. I know family portrait time can be thought of as a stressful time, but I want you to enjoy more than your images, but also the experience of making those images.
We will begin the session with the posed family portraits first...the one for the Christmas card, or to give to the grandparents. From there I will come in close and get detail shots, a few close-ups of the kids while sitting on your lap, and various angles in that same pose, just with little tweaks. After I know I have a good posed picture, we will move on to the more fun images, where it is not mandatory to look at me and smile. My family sessions include images of the whole family and then various breakdowns; Mom with kids, Dad with kids, siblings, individual children, and any other combination that we come up with in the hour time frame. These again will be an assortment of posed and candid images to give your gallery lots of variety.
After our session is complete, I will start working on your gallery. Please allow two to three weeks for completion. During that time, I will share a couple sneak peeks on my Facebook page that you can tag and share with all of your family and friends. I will also post a few on my Instagram feed. After your gallery is finished, I will send you a password protected link for you to view 30-40 of the best images from your session in a private online gallery. I will provide you with pricing information again so you can build your package that you originally selected. At this time, you will also be able to purchase additional products or upgrade to a larger package. Your gallery will be posted for one month for you to make your selections.
Creating family portraits is a job that I do not take for granted. I want your family to love and cherish these images for a lifetime!
